Rhyme Words
Teaching lower grader is always special. They are nice, honest, cute, and always make me smile :)
Other grade level also makes me smile, but especially grade 1 students. Ahh,,, I am getting speechless then.
I had a special moment with my grade 1 students. In my class, we learned about rhyme words. For students who are able to read fluently, rhyme words are easier to understand. Meanwhile, for those who are still struggling for reading, they are struggling also to understand the rhyme words.
I gave them a worksheet. Students had to draw a line to link the rhyme word. I was surprise because one of my students has done the exercise very fast, even faster than the other students who are able to read fluently.
I asked him "Who help you to finish this one?"
"No one, I did it by myself" He replied.
"Tell me, who help you. I won't be angry to you. I just want to know. This is good. You get all correct. That's nice" I said
"I did it by myself" He replied.
"Ok, how you did it?" I asked
"I just take a look the word by word. I try to find the same formation of word. For example the word "same" so, I try to find out the other word which end by "ame" which is "game". "Fine with line" and so on"
I surprised. I smile and the only word that I could say was "Great, you are so smart. Very good. You are done".
He can not read fluently but I really appreciate his effort to understand the concept. He tried his best and he did it. He solved the problem by himself very well. I really happy and grateful. I learn again from my student.
The other students also made me smile. One of my student came to me and said "Teacher, please help me. I can't read".
Then, I re-explained the instruction to make sure he is clear what he supposed to do. After that, I read the word.
The first word is "boy" so my student has to come up with they rhyme words of "boy".
He silent for a while and suddenly he said "boy, coy, woy".
I smiled. I was so happy to hear that words.
Those words are not English word. Those words are Bahasa Indonesia slank words.
What makes me smile was, through the words he mentioned. I knew that he understood the concept well.
He is smart.
Every child is smart. They need us to make them smarter.
Love you kids.
I am grateful to have you in my life.
